How to Check If Your Protein Powder Is Genuine — A Buyer's Guide for Hubli, Dharwad & Belagavi

How to Check If Your Protein Powder Is Genuine — A Buyer's Guide for Hubli, Dharwad & Belagavi

Quick answer

Before you pay for any supplement in Hubli, Dharwad or Belagavi, ask the seller for four things: the brand's authorisation certificate, their FSSAI licence number, a GST invoice, and a look at the batch code, manufacturing date and expiry printed on the tub. A seller who has all four will produce them in under a minute. A seller who doesn't will change the subject. Grow Healthy's documents are published in full further down this page — FSSAI State Licence 11225336000244, valid to 07-09-2030, and current authorisation certificates from the brands we carry.

Every few months someone walks into our store in Vidyanagar holding a tub they bought elsewhere, asking us whether it's real. Usually they've noticed something — the seal was already broken, the scoop looks wrong, the powder doesn't dissolve the way it used to, or the price was so far below MRP that it nagged at them afterwards.

We can rarely give them a straight answer, because you cannot tell a counterfeit from a photo. What you can do is check the paperwork before you pay. It takes about ninety seconds and it works at any store, including ours.

This guide is that checklist. We've published our own documents at the end so you can run the checks on us first.

Why this matters more for supplements than for most things

A fake phone charger is an annoyance. A fake protein is something you are putting into your body five days a week, often for years, frequently while training hard.

Counterfeit and grey-market supplements typically fail in one of three ways. They're underdosed — the tub says 24g protein per scoop and delivers considerably less, usually padded out with cheap filler. They're mis-stored — genuine product that has sat in a non-climate-controlled godown or been shipped through three unauthorised hands, so the protein has degraded and the fat has oxidised long before the printed expiry. Or they're outright fake — refilled tubs using genuine packaging, which is why an already-broken seal is the single biggest warning sign there is.

None of these are visible. All of them are avoidable by checking who you're buying from.

The six checks

1. Ask to see the brand's authorisation certificate

Every legitimate supplement brand in India issues written authorisation to the retailers and distributors it appoints. The certificate names the firm, names the brand, and usually states a territory and a validity period. Ask for it. A genuine dealer keeps it on the wall or on their phone and will show you without hesitating.

Read it properly when they show it. Check the firm name matches the shop you're standing in, and check the validity dates are current.

2. Check the FSSAI licence number

Supplements are regulated as food in India. Any business that stores, sells or distributes them needs an FSSAI licence, and the conditions of that licence require the operator to display a true copy at a prominent place in the premises at all times. So it should be on the wall — look for it.

The number itself is the useful part, because it's independently verifiable. A 14-digit number can be checked on the FSSAI FoSCoS portal, which will tell you the licensed business name, the licensed address, the categories they're permitted to trade in, and the validity dates. If the name and address on the portal don't match the shop, walk out.

3. Read the label, not the front of the tub

Turn it around. On genuine imported or Indian-manufactured product you should find: batch or lot number, manufacturing date, expiry or best-before date, the name and address of the manufacturer, and for imports, the name and address of the importer with their FSSAI licence number.

Missing importer details on an imported product is a serious flag — it usually means the tub did not come through a legal import channel. A batch number that's been scratched off, stickered over or smudged is a worse one.

4. Scan the brand's authenticity code

Most major brands now print a scratch-off code or QR on the tub that verifies against their own database. Scratch it in front of the seller and scan it. If the brand's system says the code has already been checked several times, or doesn't recognise it, you have your answer while you can still hand the tub back.

5. Insist on a GST invoice

Not a handwritten slip. A proper tax invoice with the seller's GSTIN, the product name, the batch, and the amount. Two reasons: a seller operating outside the formal supply chain generally cannot issue one, and if the product later turns out to be defective, the invoice is the only thing that gives you recourse with the brand.

6. Be suspicious of prices well below MRP

Reasonable discounting exists — authorised dealers buy at scale and pass some of it on, and genuine offers run around launches and festivals. But margins in this category are not enormous. When something is dramatically cheaper than everywhere else, the money is coming from somewhere: it's near-expiry stock, it's grey-market parallel import, it's been stored badly, or it isn't what the label says. Ask why it's cheap. A good seller will tell you honestly — "it's four months from expiry, that's why."

What these documents do and don't prove

We'd rather be precise than oversell, so: an authorisation certificate proves that a brand has appointed us and that our stock of that brand comes through their official supply chain. It does not make us the only place in the region worth buying from, and it says nothing about our pricing or our service — you should judge those separately.

What it does mean is that the specific failure modes described above — refilled tubs, parallel imports, product that has been through four unauthorised hands — are not how our stock reaches the shelf. That is the whole claim, and it is the one you can verify.

If you've heard something about us

We've been trading in Hubli since 2018, and things get said in a competitive market. We're not going to respond to any of it in kind, or name anyone.

We'll just do this instead: everything above is checkable. The FSSAI number verifies on a government portal. The GSTIN verifies on another. The brands can be phoned and asked directly whether Grow Healthy is appointed — GNC, Wellbeing Nutrition, Pintola, Naturell and USN all have published contact details, and we'd encourage the call. Our store is open from 10 AM to 11 PM every day and the certificates are on the wall.

If something specific has been said to you and you'd like a straight answer, message us on WhatsApp and you'll get one from Nikhil directly.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a supplement store is an authorised dealer?
Ask to see the brand's authorisation certificate and check two things on it: that the firm name matches the shop, and that the validity dates are current. Genuine dealers display these and will show you immediately.

How do I verify an FSSAI licence number?
Enter the 14-digit number on the FSSAI FoSCoS portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in. It returns the licensed business name, address, permitted food categories and validity dates. Check that the name and address match the shop you bought from. Grow Healthy's licence is 11225336000244.

Is Grow Healthy an authorised dealer for GNC?
Yes — Grow Healthy is an authorised dealer of GNC India in Hubli, and every GNC product sold here comes through GNC India's official supply chain.

Does a low price mean a supplement is fake?
Not necessarily, but it warrants a question. Genuine reasons include near-expiry stock or a brand-run promotion. Grey-market import, poor storage and counterfeiting are the other explanations. Ask the seller directly why the price is low — an honest one will tell you.

Do you deliver to Dharwad and Belagavi?
Yes. Same-day delivery across Hubballi and Dharwad is free on orders placed before 4 PM. Belagavi and the rest of North Karnataka typically take 2–3 days.
