Mass Gainer vs Whey Protein: Which One Should You Actually Buy in 2026
Nikhil NarayankarShare
Buy whey protein if you can already eat enough food and just need more protein. Buy a mass gainer only if you genuinely cannot eat enough calories in a day.
A mass gainer is not a stronger protein powder, it is a carbohydrate powder with protein mixed into it. Per kilo, gainers sold in India in 2026 cost roughly ₹900 to ₹1,500, while whey costs ₹2,872 to ₹4,449. That gap looks like a bargain until you work out what you are actually paying per gram of protein, where whey wins comfortably.
Below is the full comparison, the real 2026 prices at Grow Healthy, and a three-question test that settles it in under a minute.

What is the actual difference between a mass gainer and whey protein?
Whey protein is a concentrated protein supplement. One scoop gives you 24 to 30 grams of protein for roughly 120 calories, and almost nothing else. Its job is to help you hit a daily protein target without cooking another meal.
A mass gainer is a calorie supplement. One serving gives you 900 to 1,300 calories, most of it carbohydrate, with 50 grams or so of protein along for the ride. Its job is to close a calorie gap you cannot close with food.
The confusion happens because both are powders in similar tubs sitting on the same shelf. They solve completely different problems.
| Mass gainer | Whey protein | |
|---|---|---|
| Calories per serving | 936 to 1,284 kcal | Around 120 kcal |
| Protein per serving | 50 to 54 g | 24 to 30 g |
| Carbohydrate per serving | 183 to 250 g | 1 to 5 g |
| Serving size | 2 to 3 heaped scoops in 500 to 950 ml liquid | 1 scoop in 200 to 250 ml liquid |
| Cost per kg (2026) | ₹904 to ₹1,495 | ₹2,872 to ₹4,449 |
| Cost per gram of protein | Around ₹6 | Around ₹4.25 |
| Best for | People who cannot eat enough | People who cannot eat enough protein |
| Works while cutting? | No | Yes |
The 3-question test: which one do you actually need?
Answer these honestly before you spend anything.
1. Have you tracked what you eat for seven straight days?
If no, do that first. Most people who think they are hardgainers are eating 1,800 calories on two of every three days without realising it. A gainer bought to paper over that is money spent on a guess.
2. Are you more than 500 calories a day short of your target?
If yes, a mass gainer is a reasonable tool. If you are 200 to 300 calories short, a banana, some peanut butter and a glass of milk close the gap for a fraction of the price.
3. Are you hitting 1.6 to 2.2 g of protein per kg of bodyweight?
If no, whey is the answer regardless of what the scale says. Protein is the input that builds the muscle. Calories only decide whether you have the surplus to build it with.
The verdict for most people: whey. A mass gainer is the right buy for a genuinely underweight person with a small appetite, a very physical job, or a training volume that outruns their kitchen. For everyone else it is an expensive way to drink sugar.
What do mass gainers and whey actually cost per kilo in 2026?
This is the part almost no comparison article shows you. Here is what these products cost per kilogram of powder at Grow Healthy right now.
A gainer looks three times cheaper. Now do the protein maths.
A 1.81 kg tub of GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey holds 51 servings at 24 g of protein each, so 1,224 g of protein for ₹5,199. That is ₹4.25 per gram of protein.
A 5 kg tub of Labrada Muscle Mass Gainer gives 52 g of protein per serving alongside 250 g of carbohydrate, which works out to roughly 15 servings and about 790 g of protein for ₹4,850. That is close to ₹6 per gram of protein.
So the tub that looks cheap on the shelf is the expensive one per gram of protein. What you are buying with the difference is 3,750 g of carbohydrate.
Whey is the cheaper protein. A gainer is the cheaper calorie. Decide which one you are short of, then pay for that.

ON Gold Standard 100% Whey, 2.27 kg
24 g protein and 5.5 g BCAAs per scoop with whey isolate as the primary source, banned-substance tested for competing athletes.
Can you take mass gainer and whey protein together?
Yes, and for a lot of people it is the smarter setup. Use whey on training days around your workout, and use the gainer as a between-meals calorie top-up on the days you eat badly. What you should not do is take a full serving of both in the same hour, because you will end up with well over 80 g of protein in one sitting, which your body has no particular use for.
Buy whey, then blend one scoop with 100 g of oats, a banana and 300 ml of full-fat milk. That is roughly 700 calories and 40 g of protein from ingredients you already have. Many people find this covers the gap without buying a gainer at all.
Does a mass gainer make you fat?
It can, and the reason is dose, not the product. A full serving of Labrada or ON Serious Mass is roughly 1,250 calories. If your true daily surplus should be 300 to 500 calories, a full serving pushes you 700 or more calories past it every single day, and a meaningful share of that lands as fat.
The fix is simple: start with a half serving. One and a half scoops instead of three. Weigh yourself weekly and aim for 0.25 to 0.5% of bodyweight gained per week. If you are gaining faster than that, cut the scoop down. If the scale has not moved in three weeks, add half a scoop. Almost every bad experience with mass gainers comes from someone taking the label serving on day one.
Frequently asked questions
Is mass gainer just whey protein with sugar added?
Broadly, yes. A mass gainer is a protein blend combined with maltodextrin or another carbohydrate source, usually at a ratio of about four or five parts carbohydrate to one part protein. Better gainers also add creatine, glutamine and a vitamin blend, but the bulk of what you are buying is carbohydrate.
Which is better for a beginner, mass gainer or whey protein?
Whey, in nearly every case. A beginner's first six months of gains come from training consistently and eating enough real food. Whey supports that cheaply and without side effects. Move to a gainer only if you have tracked your food for a few weeks and confirmed you cannot close the calorie gap.
How long does it take to see results from a mass gainer?
Expect the scale to move within two to three weeks if you are genuinely in surplus, at a healthy rate of 0.25 to 0.5% of bodyweight per week. Visible muscle takes longer, typically eight to twelve weeks of consistent training alongside it. If nothing has changed after a month, your total daily intake is still too low.
Can I take whey protein without going to the gym?
Yes. Whey is a food, not a drug. If you struggle to hit your protein target from meals, a scoop is a convenient way to get there whether or not you train that day. It will not build muscle on its own, and it will not cause fat gain unless it puts you in a calorie surplus.
Is whey protein safe for the kidneys?
For people with healthy kidneys, higher protein intakes have not been shown to cause kidney damage. Anyone with existing kidney disease should speak to a doctor before increasing protein intake. If you are unsure, get a routine blood test before starting, which is sensible practice regardless of supplements.
How do I know the tub I am buying is genuine?
Buy from an authorised dealer, insist on a GST invoice, and check the seal and batch code before you leave. We cover the full checklist in our guide on how to check if your protein powder is genuine. At Grow Healthy you can also request a WhatsApp video call to see the sealed tub and its batch number on camera before we ship it.
Still not sure which one you need?
Tell us your weight, your training days and what a normal day of eating looks like. We will tell you honestly whether you need a gainer or just whey, even if the cheaper answer is the right one.
